Searching for People

  1. a. Yes mine and both my parents are on white pages directory. b. I could find my dads information on the people search, reverse phone, and reverse address directories. c. All the directories listed the correct information on my parents.
  2. I could not find my information, but I could find my parents. I think that could be good and bad. Good, so if anyone from my parents past was trying to reach them to catch up on old times that would be good. If someone was trying to get their information to hurt them then that would be bad.
  3. b. I think that the directories with SuperPages you can specialize a little bit more with them having couple different directories to use to find your information. But for the most part they have the same directories that white pages does.
  4. b. I first used Lycos a searched Wal-Mart in Lincoln by name and got their address: 825 Malerich Drive, Lincoln, Il 62656. Phone #(217)-735-2314 for the main store. I also find a map directing you how to get there. Then I used SuperPages and used a advanced search and just used the physical address and found all the same information I did at the other site.

Government

The site that I found is www.usa.gov . To join the Army and become a Army Infantryman. An infantryman is the basic fighting backbone of our Army. All you really need is your high school diploma of GED to join the military, and to pass the Army's physical before they let you join. You start out at Private E1 with 2 years experience your salary is $15,282 a year, but a Staff Sergeant E6 with 6 years experience you make $29,581 a year. If you want to apply just contact your closest Army recruiter and sign up.

Searching News

Both these sites Google news and WN networks are similar, because they both sites just talk about current events as far as the world, U.S., business and they both are very up to date and the posts are not more than a couple days old. Google news is more of a written based site to first find the topic you are interested in. As far as WN networks goes they are more pictured based find the topic that you are interested in.

Narrative Evaluation

I think that this site is a hater site. They are trying to down play and discredit Martin Luther King Jr. for all his accomplishments that he did. They try to portray him as a bad person. The author of this site is Stormfront, and this site I do not think is very reliable at all. This site is based on just personal belief and I think just stems from racism more then anything. This site just seems to be a white nationalist site for neo-Nazi. I do not agree with this site, because first off this site is just based on their opinion and is not accredited site. All they are tyring to do is take the respect and honor that MLK has made for him by the down playing the great accomplishments he helped with the black community during segregation. I think the goal of the site is just to make people racist more than anything.
The site was fairly easy to use and to navigate through. It was not very visually enhancing at all. The appearance of the site is very boring and dull. So I do not at all agree with what this site is trying to get across to its viewers. I think that the site is wrong in what they are trying to advertise, and I would not recommend this site to anyone unless they are racist too.

Better Business Bureau and Amazon

BBBOnline:

  1. How can you tell if a transction is secure? A lot of many Web sites use Secure Sockets Layer technology to encrypt people's credit card infomation that we put on the Internet. Look at the protocol and if it is "https:" instead of "http:" then this technology is in place and working

  2. What is the safest way to pay for an online purchase? Using a credit card is the safest way. You can only be held liable to $50 on a unauthorized purchase's with a credit card. Also anyone can return product in most cases. We can also save money paying with credit card espically if you pay the bill in full when it comes.

  3. To whom can I complain if I am not satisfied with an online purhchase? Check their Web site for a "contact us" and email or get phone number to get ahold of someone to complain too. If still not satified with what the company said, there are other organizations to contact and complain too. These organizations are Better Business Bureau, The Federal Trade Commissions Consumer Complaint Form, or even contact the nearest States Attorney Gerenal Office.

  4. What is the BBBOnline Privacy Seal Program? To help web users find reliable, trustworthy, business online, and so these businesses our easier to find.

  5. What requirements must companies meet to earn the BBBOnline privacy seal? Provide the BBB with ownership and management of business and street address and telephone number from where they do business. Must have been a business for one year. Must have a satisfactory complaint handling record and have responded promptly to all customer complaints.

10 Tips to protect personal information

10 Tips to Protect Personal Information
  1. Make sure to use anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software.
  2. Read privacy policies so you know how your information is protected.
  3. Set up your browsers and operating systems to stop pop-ups and cookies.
  4. Use more than one email address and use one just for personal communication.
  5. Look for third-party seals or certification to make sure the company is trustworthy.
  6. Back up important files.
  7. Use email addresses and information that don't identify you personally on Web sites that you don't trust.
  8. Change password on regular basis
  9. Use email encryption
  10. Log in anonymously or use anonymizing of free ID Web sites to generate your ID

Web link: http://www.truste.org/consumers/consumer_tips.php

I have personally not used many of these precaution's so that I don't become a victim online. I do use anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall to protect my PC. I have never read privacy policies to see how the companies are protecting my personal information. I don't use any type of operating system to slow down or stop pop-ups. I only use one email address, but maybe now I will open another one. I have not checked a Web site for a seal to make sure that they are trustworthy. I do back up important files. I need too start using a email address that don't give out my personal information on Web site's that I don't trust. I should change my password more often. I do use email encryption. I will start to use Web sites that I anonymously use my ID. By not doing half of all these precautions I did not realize how much trouble I could be getting myself into. I will start to use more of these precautions to help protect my information on the Internet.

How to be Vigilant or The Risk

I felt that in this article it was explaining how the Internet is keeping tabs on us no matter what we do. How these "cookies" track people's online behavior, so to create a personal profile about them. The cookies make it more convenient by saving your login and password, but they also save you credit card information. That could make people more prone to identify theft or people charging bogus amounts on our credit cards. These cookies build these profile's and store them in huge data base's. Then web bugs that send all information back to a server on what we surf about. The bugs send IP Address, what browsers we use, and that date and time with text on what we are viewing. I think that these corporations, ad agencies, and whoever obtains this information are just breaking our privacy rights. Trying to find ways to trap money out of people any way that they can. Just one big scam and invasion a privacy I believe.

How to be Vigilant or Protecting Yourself

If you have been hacked? There are many agencies to report the crime, but usually report to FBI local office, U.S. Secret Service, or Internet Crime Complaint Center are all locations that someone could use. The local FBI office for Central Illinois is Springfield. The address is FBI Springfield, 900 East Linton Ave., Springfield, Illinois 62703, and the phone number is (217)-522-9675. The Internet Crime Complaint Center is basically and junction box for the FBI and National White Collar Crime Center. The IC3 helps both those departments by setting up red flags on potential for suspected criminal and civil violations.

Hackers- Who and Why?

I believe that hackers could be anyone. They could be my neighbor or my little brother for all I know. A hacker could be someone who hurts or helps us, we just don't really know. They could steal our entire identities or they could help us by showing us how easy they can take control of our computers, so they could help us by telling us how to protect our PCs better. I do believe that hackers our a new counter culture to our society today, because they live their lives in a whole new technological and cyber world. Hackers say they like to hack for many reasons some for bragging rights, some say that they hack for the power trip that they get, and some say they hack to find loop holes and problems in software's to let the providers (Microsoft) know. Hackers say, that they hack to find faults on software, and let the people know. Some hackers do what they do to show people how they need to be more careful on the Internet, and how they need try to use some type of firewall or anti-virus software. I believe that many hackers do nothing but hurt our communities by stealing money and people's identities. I also believe though that many hackers out there help us greatly. By looking out for the people and finding the problems with software and bringing that to the people's attention. They will help bring the Internet to a more safe place and they could help build the code of ethic's for the Internet. So that other countries or terrorists can not use the Internet against other people and nation's to greatly hurt them. Like the movie stated that hackers will have a great stabilizability of the cyberspace and that I do believe.

ICANN

  1. ICANN is a non-profit corportation in charge of the IP Address locations and Top-Level Domain name system mangement. So they basically take the IP Address numbers and give them a Domain Name, so it is easier for people to search for what they want.
  2. A Domain Name System takes the IP Address numbers and gives it a Domain Name, ex. 64.233.167.99 is the IP Address for www.google.com. This system just makes it easier on the users searching for information on the internet.
  3. ICANN role is to arrange all the managment of the techincal parts of DNS, so that it is easier for the users of the internet to find the right internet addresses. They do not have anything with the Top-Level Domain Names such as .com, .net, .org, and etc.

IP Address

IP Addresses for my favorite Domain Names.

Domain Name IP
1. www.google.com 64.233.167.99
2. www.espn.go.com 198.105.192.69
3. www.aol.com 205.188.102.12
4. www.youtube.com 208.65.153.251
5. www.msn.com 65.54.152.126

Methods of Connection to the Internet

1. One method connecting to the Internet is through your local telephone company with dial-up connection. Some advantages are that it can be used were ever you have a telephone connection or line. It also is very inexpensive. Some disadvantages are that the connection is very slow. Anytime someone is using the phone you can't use the Internet. It will kick you off after long times on the connection. This connection would best be for someone who lives way out in the middle of nowhere or someone that does not having many choices of ISP's.

2. Another type of ISP that someone could consider is cable. Some advantages are that the connection is typically fast, unless all your neighbors are on the Internet. It is faster with downloads and uploads. It's direct connect so your always connected to Internet, so can get on whenever you want. Some disadvantages are that it is typically is more expensive then a lot of other providers. Can only get the ISP were you can get cable for your TV. I would say being direct connect has its disadvantages too because you more prone to attacks over the Internet with hackers and whatnot. People that are more located in a urban area would be more prone to this ISP.

"Free" Internet Service Offers

This article basically telling how all these so called "free" ISP are trying to screw you out of your money. They all are only free for about the first month, and then if you don't cancel them. They automatically sign you up for a contact, which typically last one year. The ISP make it hard to find and hide the information you need to learn how the cancel there services. Once they get you after that first month the rates are just outrages. Then if you sign up with that ISP and they don't offer a local number for dial-up you have to use a long distance number. Some ISP have toll free numbers but the FTC has found that some providers charge up to 5 to 6 dollars and hour to use the toll free number. The ISP are just trying to make as much money as they can off people how jump for joy when they see the word "free" and just sign right up. Well I would personally research these ISP first before I sign up. The link to this article is www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/freeispalrt.shtm.
